Come with me to explore Grand Central Market — Los Angeles’ oldest and largest public market.
Located in the heart of Downtown LA, Grand Central Market is a historic icon that’s been feeding the city since 1917. Today, it’s home to over 40 diverse food stalls, each offering a taste of the flavors, cultures, and creativity that make Los Angeles one of the most exciting food cities in the world.
From bold street eats to refined pastries, and cold-pressed juices to iconic local art, this market is a celebration of California’s best ingredients, visionary chefs, and passionate entrepreneurs. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local foodie, there’s always something new (and delicious) to discover here.
Let’s dive into the stalls, bites, and sips that made our morning at Grand Central Market unforgettable.
AMBIANCE
From the moment I stepped in, the ambiance pulled me in—dark and moody, with ambient lighting in rich hues of red, blue, and green casting a surreal glow over the food stalls. I got there early, right as the place opened, and it was mostly locals swinging by for a quick bite before heading to work. There was a laid-back, unhurried vibe that made it easy to take everything in.
Even in those early hours, you could feel the potential energy of the place—I can only imagine how vibrant and packed it must get on weekend evenings, buzzing with people and music. What stood out to me beyond the food was the local Los Angeles art scattered throughout, including an eye-catching tribute to Kobe Bryant that felt both powerful and personal.
Lines were short, the stalls were easy to approach, and the service was impressively quick. We sampled a few spots, and each delivered solid, satisfying food without much wait. It’s the kind of spot that feels rooted in the city—gritty, creative, and full of flavor.

EGGSLUT

Rating: 4/5
Out of all the food stalls we visited, EggSlut easily had the longest line. With its bold, cheeky name and a strong presence on Instagram, it’s become something of a foodie magnet. We decided to try the popular Fairfax breakfast sandwich, which features cage-free soft scrambled eggs, chives, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and sriracha mayo, all tucked into a warm brioche bun.
The eggs were beautifully creamy, and the caramelized onions added a subtle sweetness that paired well with the richness of the cheese. The sriracha mayo had a nice kick, though I found myself wishing it packed a bit more heat. Texture-wise, the sandwich was soft throughout—I would’ve loved a bit of crunch or contrast to balance it out. While it was satisfying overall, we did notice a lack of vegetarian-friendly options on the menu, which was a bit of a letdown for those looking to explore more meatless choices.
VILLA TACOS

Rating: 5/5
Of all the food stalls we visited, Villa’s Tacos easily stole the show. It was hands-down the best bite of the day. The team behind the counter was quick, efficient, and incredibly accommodating, offering a wide variety of taco options—including several for different dietary needs. Everything moved fast without feeling rushed, which made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Their handmade blue corn tortillas were pressed to order, giving each taco a warm, rustic freshness you could taste. Every taco came with a colorful trio of radishes, lime wedges, and tangy hibiscus-pickled onions—a perfect balance of flavors and textures. I went with the Grilled Soyrizo taco topped with grilled pineapple and onions, and it was everything: salty, spicy, creamy, and deeply savory. I’m still thinking about it.
Next time, I’m definitely going for the Vegan Trio. This stall didn’t just serve amazing tacos—it truly captured the spirit of L.A. Bold, flavorful, and unapologetically local, Villa’s Tacos felt like an instant classic.
MCCONNELL’S FINE ICE CREAM

Rating: 4/5
For a cold treat on a hot summer day, we couldn’t resist stopping by McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams. I went for the Eureka Lemon & Marionberries flavor—a bright, fruity combination that struck just the right balance between tangy and sweet. The citrusy lemon paired beautifully with the rich, jammy marionberries, making it a refreshing classic.
The portion size was generous enough to share between two, which makes it a great option if you’re looking to sample something sweet while strolling through the rest of the market. It was the perfect way to cool down and cap off our tasting adventure.
THE DONUT MAN

Rating: 3/5
This was your classic, no-frills donut stall—the kind that draws a steady stream of workers stopping by to grab a dozen before heading off to their jobs. The display was filled with traditional favorites and seasonal specials, and we noticed plenty of people picking up the seasonal strawberry-stuffed donut as well as the classic glazed.
Personally, I found the donuts to be extremely sweet, though that’s to be expected with old-school American-style treats. There’s definitely a nostalgic charm to them, and the stall offers a solid variety—from classic options to more fruit-forward seasonal picks. That said, if you’re looking for something more unique or unexpected, this might be one to skip. It’s perfect for those who love a sugary throwback, but not quite a standout in an otherwise creative and diverse food lineup.
BASTION BAKERY

Rating: 5/5
Bastion Bakery was another stall I’d absolutely come back to again. They specialize in hand-crafted baked goods, offering a delicious mix of both sweet and savory pastries. We tried the Pistachio Croissant and the Everything Croissant, and both were standouts.
The Everything Croissant was a creative twist on the classic bagel flavor—topped with everything bagel seasoning and generously filled with cream cheese inside. It was rich, savory, and incredibly satisfying. The Pistachio Croissant was equally impressive, crusted with crushed pistachios on the outside and filled with a thick, luscious pistachio cream on the inside.
Both pastries were warmed up for us on the spot, and we devoured them within minutes. If you’re visiting Grand Central Market in the morning, this is one stall you don’t want to miss. Just be sure to get there early—these go fast.
THE JUICE

Rating: 4/5
To balance out all the indulgent bites, we stopped by a juice stall named “The Juice.” We tried two refreshing blends: Juice No. 5 and Juice No. 2. Juice No. 5 was a vibrant mix of apples, beets, greens, lemon, and ginger—a well-balanced drink that was earthy, zesty, and naturally sweet. It felt energizing without being overly heavy.
Juice No. 2 was simpler but just as satisfying, combining carrots and coconut for a smooth, lightly sweet flavor with a tropical twist. Both juices were made with organic ingredients and tasted clean, fresh, and revitalizing—perfect for sipping as you explore the rest of the market.
NONNA’S EMPANADAS

Rating: 3/5
With so many options on offer, we decided to try the vegetarian empanadas. Unfortunately, this one didn’t quite hit the mark. We stopped by early in the morning, hoping for a fresh, warm pastry—but the empanada wasn’t hot or crisp, which was a bit of a letdown.
The filling was minimal, leaving the empanada feeling overly doughy and underwhelming. While the stall had a wide variety of flavors to choose from, based on our experience, I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way for this one—especially with so many standout options nearby.
